The process
I started by exploring the available projects on the translation platform and reading the Translator Handbook to understand the review process. Once I felt comfortable, I picked the Elementor Website Builder plugin and began translating strings one by one, checking each against the locale glossary for consistency.
Tools and resources
- The WordPress translation platform (translate.wordpress.org)
- The Translator Handbook and the locale glossary for Spanish (Costa Rica)
- Translation memory suggestions and reference strings from other locales
Challenges
The hardest part was handling technical details such as placeholder variables (like %1$s) and HTML tags, which must be preserved exactly. I also had to pay close attention to context so that each translation sounded natural rather than literal. Over time, this became second nature.
